( IN CHARACTER )
Name: Cassia
Nickname: N/A unless we're counting Cass
Age: 60, but looks about 30, owing to her species.
Stage name: Ortensia
Job: One half of an acrobatic/clown double act with
trivelin
Played by: Sue Denim
Species: Dryad (Used to mean general tree nymph rather than just an oak nymph)
Personality: Cassia is rather child like (owing to both her species and the fact that she's still very young). As she's only recently been exposed to the outside world she's quite naive and tends to need guidance (though she tends to go to Nathaniel for such things, very much taking his lead in most situations) She often comes off as a little shy and reserved though she is a lot friendlier than she used to be and opens up fairly quickly once she gets to know somebody. She's fun loving and enjoys spending her free time running and dancing around in green areas, and climbing trees to just watching people when she isn't working. This is largely because she feels misplaced if she isn't near trees for prolonged periods of time. To counter this fun loving side of her she also has a firey temper though it takes quite a lot to get her to show it. She is, for example, fiercely protective of her partner and prone to jealousy where he's concerned. Cassia also doesn't like being inside very much, getting antsy when she has to travel long distances and preferring to sleep outside. She's somewhat distrusting towards humans having witnessed them destroy her home and various other forested areas.
History:Cassia originally lived in a large wood on the outskirts of a town in the North of England, with a number of other dryads, watching humanity and helping to tend public green areas. As a youngest (though arguably that's what she still it) her fellow, but older, dryads used to tell her stories about how the area used to be, with fields and trees everywhere. As the years passed though more and more of their home was cut down her fellow dryads began to leave in an attempt to find somewhere safer. She however stayed even as her wood became little more than a copse on the edge of an industrial estate, all in the name of human progress. With everyone else gone she grew lonely and angry, but was too stubborn to leave her home and let the humans win.
In 2000 though things changed both quickly and drastically when a young man ran away to her home. Rather than being upset and scaring him off though she found was more than a little interested in the newcomer, sensing that he was different from other humans. Staying hidden from him she looked out for him, covering him with blankets of moss and leaves at night to make he didn't get cold and finding nuts and berries to feed him, which she left for him in the morning before hiding again (it was less Disney than it sounds). She only managed to keep up this level of secrecy for a few days though until he caught her leaving food. This was something of a relief as she was becoming quite taken by the strange boy despite knowing nothing about him, beyond the fact that he was different. This was the first outside contact she'd had in a number of years and luckily the pair got on. With Nathaniel telling her about the outside world, about the things going on in his head and about the Commedia Dell'Arte. All too soon however it became apparent that her new friend could not live amongst the trees as she could and he grew ill. Despite her best efforts Cassia couldn't nurse him back to health and she persuaded him he had to return home before he grew worse.
Nathaniel continued to visit for a couple of years, with the pair growing closer over time. Cassia excited and enthusiastic about the things he was teaching her, particularly about the Commedia, something as it turned out they both had a talent for. However Nathaniel eventually left his village and Cassia to attend university. Though he still visited occasionally she missed him greatly while he was gone and things were not quite the same. She went back to the way she had been, focusing her energies on protecting what was left of her home since it was the only thing that mattered to her.
A few years after Nathaniel's departure things took a turn for the worse when the council made plans to extend the industrial estate next to Cassia's copse. This meant cutting down the last of the trees that were her home. It's said that dryads themselves can 'take first revenge on a man who sought to do harm to the trees' in Artemis' stead. This is what Cassia did when a group of construction works came to cut down the trees. She decided she'd had enough of sitting back while her home was destroyed, so when the first worker came to start the cutting she challenged him, planning to frighten him off, rough him up a little, but unfortunately the dryad had no idea of her own power or her own anger and the man she attacked later died. She was distraught about what happened, the story of the event being shown on the news and in the newspaper portraying her as a violent environmental activist. She had no idea what would happen if she was arrested, since she isn't human and she didn't want to expose her kind so she turned to the only person she trusted - Nathaniel who decided the best idea was for them to both leave for America. She has little idea about exactly what this trip involved and how much he had to do to enable her to travel as she trusts him to take care of her even after so long without him.
Despite her academic knowledge of the outside world the trip to America terrified her, being so far away from her home and surrounded by people and things she didn't understand. This served to make her cling to and rely on Nathaniel even more. He is very much her stabilising influence.
The couple travelled America with an act that grew from the things Nathaniel had taught Cassia about the Commedia Dell'Arte when he was younger and the things he'd learnt at university. They busked on the streets in order to make money, generally ending up in whatever town the carnival had recently been in just a little too late. During this time they began to hear talk of the carnival, of its strange acts and staff and decided to try and find it and see if they could join them since it seemed like it would be safer than travelling alone, never knowing if they'd have enough money to move on or for food.
